Map collection, 1797-1950.

Collection consists largely of maps of Glen Cove and the Town of Oyster Bay, including Sanborn insurance maps for the village, 1893. Other maps include Long Island, 1906, Nassau County, 1932-1939, Hempstead Harbor chart, 1937, Seacliff Grove development, 1871, and manuscript map of the farm of Baruck Muttee. Also, atlases for Nassau County, 1906, and Long Island, 1873.

The Sanborn Map Company was founded in 1867 with headquarters in New York City. Its purpose was to produce maps that would show "at a glance the character of the fire insurance risks of all buildings" in a give community. Since these maps had a very specialized use, "there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single map sheet".
